Here's the thing, if you get a nod in your favour for working out in the gym as opposed to dossing on a sofa then so be it. I'll give you that nod. I'd rather you do something than sweet F.A. I'd rather see you making a real hash of some bizarre made up movement on the crossover pulley machine than nothing.
But I'd prefer to see squats and other big compounds done over the made up tosh. Let's say there's a 100 members in a gym. 10-20 will be doing some kind of half assed shit. At best they are copying something they saw someone else do. I've even noticed, in my big head way, myself and others draw other members to where they are working out. So a good bencher ends up with guys around him working chest and so on.
Even in our gym I am seeing, recently, a kind of mixed up hash. Yes it's the end of the competition season for the vast majority of strongman events but that doesn't mean people should be doing 'whatever I feel like'.
I'd prefer, as per Nick McKinless's suggestions in the past post competition season training to become broken down into 1, 2 or 3 month mini-periods. A month bringing up weaknesses, 2 getting fit yet all the while keeping some skills work in there. The final period before the season starts you start getting serious and bringing ALL the events back up to competition level.
Right now we should have winter training - hard, heavy and getting strong and as a secondary focus only - the Whey Power Challenge. It's secondary because it consists of, as events, those very same hard and heavy lifts people should be doing. If there is an specialized aspect to it it's the 'single rep max'.
For those of you not training in the Whey Gym please don't be going through the motions just to get 'I go to the gym points' cos I might just burst a blood vessel in frustration and even with my back all crooked find my right foot taking aim at your arses hoping to knock some sense into ya all!
