One of the best I've seen for a while by Climber511 on the Gripboard:
I put this up a while back on another board but thought you all might enjoy it as well.
I was bored today so I answered a few questions for you all - what's that, you didn't ask any questions - oh well, here's the answers anyway.
• How long will it take me to be able to do (whatever)? Answer – as long as it takes but if you were working out instead of playing on the computer – it might be less.
• Can anyone close a #3 or #4 gripper if they train hard enough? Answer – obviously not.
• Is the Original Blob harder than all others? Answer – well, the other half of the same dumbbell should be as hard anyway but seriously – York made quite a few dumbbells just like it, if you have one – it will be just like the Original (or awful close). The newer ones are a bit easier but still a great feat of strength.
• Is Sorin’s Grip Gauntlet hard”? Answer – not really – it only took Richard (who is one strong dude) his whole life to accomplish it – I suppose doing it in half that time would be pretty good. Answer number two – give it a try and get back to us.
• Does hand size matter? Answer – every 260# guy I know with 8 inch plus hands says we’re just a bunch of whiners – your opinion may vary. A quick look at the contest results might help you decide the truth.
• If I add kettlebells to my workout, will I be able to deadlift 700#. Answer - Of course you will, when you hit a triple with your 650# pound kettlebell, 700 will go!
• Are there “secrets” and will you tell me what they are? Answer – only the “gurus” among us can tell you the answers – and if you need a “certification” from another “guru” first.
• How much should I pay to learn the “secrets”? Answer – If you send me $5000 – and you have $5000 – I’ll take you personally to Nepal and we’ll go to the temple up in the mountains where all answers lie – I went a few years ago and I’d love to go back. I’ll leave you there to ask questions while I go climb a mountain or two – we’ll both learn a lot I’m sure. I will certify you in several disciplines upon our return. IWTTMALSS – I Went To The Mountains And Learned Some Stuff cert. You will be able to teach your own students afterwards. You can use all those initials after your name just like a real personal trainer but in my certification process, you’ll see some of the most beautiful country on earth – in “their” cert, you take a test in a classroom or gym – you choose..
• Do I need a coach to learn the Olympic Lifts? Answer – Nope!
• Do I need a coach to learn to Olympic Lift well? Answer - Of course not – there are many World Champions who learned from U-Tube – you could be next!
• Are big people stronger than smaller people? Answer – Yes
• Do steroids work? Answer – I guess, either that or a lot of people with Gold Medals on their wall have sure been fooled over the years.
• When should I start taking steroids? Answer – when you’re 70 – you can start having unprotected sex then too – it takes a while for these things to kill you and heck, by then you can’t have that much time left anyway.
• What about supplements? Answer – what did you eat for breakfast?
Not questions but just some stuff I thought up. Now don’t any of you guys go taking any of this stuff serious – it’s just me having some fun!
• If you aren’t a genetic freak today – odds are you won’t be tomorrow either. Don’t let it get you down.
• God created everyone equal – well, some did turn out a little more equal than others – live with it.
• You can’t pay an athlete several million a year to be the best he can be and then not expect him to use everything possible to do just that. Just tell me you wouldn’t do some of the things they do for a 5 million a year contract. I’d probably eat doggy do for that kind of money!
• On the other hand – punching holes in your butt to take your bench press from 250 to 300 might be a little lower on the cost to benefit scale.
• It seems like the longer, harder and smarter I work – the more weight I can lift – go figure.
• Consider the way you look and how strong you are at 20 as a gift from God – what happens several decades later might have more to do with what you have done with your life.
• It’s called training for a reason – it’s to prepare you for whatever the real event is going to be – try to remember that when it’s time to actually go do something with all those muscles. Now get out of the gym, off the computer and go DO something!
• Everything works for a while – or for the other guy – or when you’re 16 – or unless you’re stupid enough to mess the whole thing up somehow like not eating breakfast or getting any sleep.
• HIT works but at a price – high volume works but at a price – low volume works but (you guessed it) - everything works but has a price – hard training is not exactly healthy. At least try to understand this right up front and take care of the inevitable aches, pains, and more serious stuff that happens. When in doubt, seeing a doctor is a good idea – do not take medical advice from the internet.
• Variety is the key to a long long career – specializing will make you better at your chosen field but at a price. Variety in training equals a generalist – specializing will make you well – a specialist I guess. You can choose to do both at different times of your life of course. To be the “best” at something – anything – you will have to take the risk of specializing in it for a long period of time.
• There are 168 hours in a week. It’s not just the 3 or 4 hours each week you spend lifting heavy stuff that makes you strong, fit, ripped, healthy, etc. There’s another hundred and sixty some hours in there that might make a difference somehow. Think about it!
• Forgetting to train ANY muscle etc in your body will come back and bite you on the butt when least expected.
Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow."
